Setting up a consent management platform
Websites operated in some jurisdictions must ask visitors' permission to use cookies.
Some legislation requires users to have control over all cookies set on a website, with sites required to not only gain visitors' consent but also give them control over each one.
Consent management platforms are specialised products designed to manage these preferences and ensure website operators comply with their local requirements.
These can easily be integrated into Aiir or other content management systems in just a few steps.
🍪 Can I just use a cookie banner?
In the UK, EU, and several US states, banners informing visitors that cookies are present are no longer sufficient to meet data protection requirements.
In many cases, the rules now require websites to ask visitors to accept, reject or individually control cookies before they are set.
This means purpose-built third party tools like consent management platforms may be required to comply with your local laws.
⚖️ Which laws do my website need to comply with?
This depends on your local rules and regulations. Some territories are not required to inform or obtain consent from website visitors regarding cookie use, but others do.
Some laws require website owners to do more than notify visitors that cookies are being used; they must ask visitors to accept or reject their use before using the site. This is why some websites' cookie information obstructs the screen until you have chosen an option.
Other laws go further and require websites to allow users to have control over all cookies set
In some cases, websites are not permitted to let visitors use the site before indicating their preference regarding cookies.
If you are unsure which rules apply to your website's use of cookies, seek legal advice.
☑️ How do I set up a consent management platform?
Adding a consent management platform to your Aiir website only takes a few short steps.
Once you have chosen a consent management platform, during its setup process, you will be given a chunk of HTML code to be added to your website.
This may be a line or two or a large chunk, depending on the platform you have used.
Copy the HTML code provided and in Aiir, go to Site Settings > Head and Body HTML.
In most cases, the consent tool will require the code to be embedded within your site's <head> tags. Paste the code into the appropriate box and click 'Save'.
🤷 Which cookies are being used on my website?
This depends entirely on the content you have included on your website. Third-party advertisements or analytics tracking will come with their own cookies, as will some social media content, like videos or embedded posts.
Aiir's website builder only uses a few required cookies for things like remembering when someone has logged in to the Listener Club or set a preferred location, station or language. We've published a full list of all our cookies, which you can use to create your own explainer for your site if required.
