What are WebVT.pro domains?

An optional extra for PlayoutONE Pro customers who use WebVT is a dedicated WebVT.pro domain.

As well as providing an easy-to-remember way to access WebVT, there is an another useful feature for customers without a fixed WAN IP address.

🌐 What kind of IP address do I have?

Each router, server, or other device which connects to the internet will have its own IP address. Dynamic IP addresses are the most common type of address allocated by internet service providers worldwide. These can change as time goes on, as you've been allocated one at random from a pool of other customers with the same internet service provider.

Dynamic IP addresses are commonly used for domestic internet connections, which predominantly connect to access other services, without requiring remote devices to connect to your network.

The alternative is a static or fixed IP address, which is usually an optional extra which can be added to business internet connections for a small recurring charge. Static IP addresses enable your network to reserve a dedicated IP address that will never change, making it easy to allow access to services hosted within your network, such as WebVT, from outside your local network.

⌨️ Where do WebVT.pro domains come in?

Unless you have a fixed IP address provisioned by your internet service provider, accessing locally-hosted services like WebVT can be a challenge. As your ISP changes your network's IP address, any domain you point towards your network will need to be regularly updated to point to the correct destination.

WebVT.pro domains allow WebVT to use what's called "Dynamic DNS" to automatically update your external domain each time your IP address changes. The WebVT server app can detect IP address changes and notify our WebVT.pro service, which will quickly update your domain to the new destination without any action required by you.

It makes it easy for customers without static IP addresses to take advantage of the flexibility WebVT offers.
